The Nature Path ” Cinque Torri Giau ” or Path ” Francesca Brusarosco “, is developed entirely at altitudes above 2000 meters in a setting of incomparable beauty with panoramic views on the great spectacle of Tofane, Cime di Fanes, Formin M., Cernera M. and Marmolada . The tour consists of two parts: a circular route, in the Cinque Torri area, and a longer track that leads to the Passo Giau. Both allow you to get in touch with some of the most characteristic habitats of the Dolomite mountains: rocks, debris areas, grasslands, wetlands, shrubs and larch- cembreti woods.

Track tips

Starting from the Cinque Torri refuge or Scoiattoli refuge you can take the short route, in orange on the map, which takes you through different habitats: from the rocky walls of the Great Tower, up to the sunny meadows of alpine moorland, to get under the Cinque Torri Refuge, the bog of Prati di Naerou, formed from the sources of the Ru de Sora . The long route, in red on the map, you can travel by both Cinque Torri and Scoiattoli Refuge from Passo Giau. The crossing is characterized by many ups and downs through the wild valleys covered by mugo, larch trees monumental crossing the valley of the foramen of glacial origin. Glacial past is visible by the numerous erratic blocks located on the way: the largest rock has a characteristic shape of a mushroom . Near the Giau  Pass you can pass through beautiful wet meadows and flowers.

The whole area has a rich fauna especially more in particular times of day (morning or evening) and in period of the year (for example, early spring and fall) than those where there is the presence of the tourists. Pay attention to the many signs that animals leave: there should always be a pair of binoculars!

Among the volatile species is not uncommon to see on the walls of the Cinque Torri the flight of the Wallcreeper, there are also Accentors, feeding on the grasslands near the Scoiattoli Refuge and the Black Redstart. The grasslands are frequently visited by theReal Eagle, hunting  for marmots, and by kestrels, present only during the summer.

Among mammals the most eye-catching is the presence Marmot, which can be seen easily throughout the area and in particular in the Fedare,  going back in the summer with the Fedare chairlift you can hear the characteristic whistle and see many marmots near their dens before the Nuvolau and dell’Averau . The Cinque Torri area is fully developed at altitudes between 2100 m and 2400 min open spaces above the tree line, the extension of the grasslands and the high biodiversity of the area provides rich blooms that take place by end May to early September .

Bai de Dones Lake

It is a clear stretch of water, surrounded by fir trees and beautiful stone pine, which is few steps from the refuge Bai de Dones, at the starting point of the chairlift to the Scoiattoli Refuge at Cinque Torri. According to the legends of the Dolomites this enchanting lake is inhabited by the Anguane, creatures described as beautiful girls with goat’s feet, serving the god Silvanus. The lakeis inhabited by the good anguanes that help farmers in their work and women to be more beautiful. On the bottom of the lake, in the area of the north shore, there is an Egyptian cross or ankh, made ​​with stones. This symbol, said Ankh or cross Ekh, is also known as key of life and is an ancient Egyptian sacred symbol which comes from a hieroglyph symbolizing eternal life and immortality .

Limides Lake

The little Limedes Lake or Limides Limides is located near the Passo Falzarego,under the Col Gallina, on the Averau slopes at an altitude of 2171 m. It is easily accessible from the Passo Falzarego, going along the route XX or from the Col Gallina Refuge, along Route XX. The landscape ranges from Averau to Lagazuoi Piccolo, the Col dei Bos and Tofana Rozes. In summer at sunset Averau and Tofana di Rozes reflect on the waters of Limides Lake.

Lago Federa

The lake is located in a most charming depressions at the edge of the woods on the slopes of the eastern wall of the Croda da Lago, with a privileged view on the Becco di Mezzodì, the Croda Rossa, the Pomagagnon, the Cristallo and the Sorapiss. On the south shore lies the refuge Croda da Lago-Gianni Palmieri, the lake and the refuge are easily accessible through various hiking trails. (itinerary and route XX XX).

Ajal and Pianozes Lake

The Ajal and Pianozes lake can be visited as part of a circular walk starting from Hotel Argentina (Itinerario XX); the route offers a fascinating view of thesurrounding rock giants, the walk takes place in a peaceful and quiet spruce forest not rarely accompanied by squirrels .
